Cape Run eBook Richard Givan

I'm a big fan of WWII thrillers, which is the primary reason I was attracted to this novel. Overall, it was a fun read and enjoyable. The plot was good, the characters had depth, and there were a ton of details about the life and times of the 1940s. In some cases the details seemed forced, as though the author was making use of all of his research. The ending was a little over the top and fairly predictable, but it tied everything together nicely. Overall, it's worth a read if you like historic fiction.

This book was not perfect, however. There were several things that were distracting that diminished from the overall enjoyment of the book. Please note, I'm not a stickler for grammar. The only time it bothers me is when I need to go back and read a sentence or section more than once to determine the author's meaning. There were multiple instances of this found in this book. There were also multiple typos (misspellings, incorrect words, and an instance where the author typed "tell told" next to each other. I'm sure the latter was a correction that wasn't removed).

There was another instance in which the reader is introduced to a minor character by name, the character has an interaction with one of the major characters, then we are told "the pastor did xyz." A couple paragraphs later, the minor character revealed to the other major character that he was a pastor. In other words, the reader as told something before it was revealed to the character. I had to flip back a few pages to see if I had missed something. I hadn't; the writing was just out of order.

In my opinion, this book would have benefited greatly from a professional editor. As it is, I gave the 4-star rating based on the entertainment factor, and not on the mechanics of the writing. Overall, I would recommend this to fans of the era or genre.

Cape Run eBook Richard Givan Reviews

This was a pretty good yarn, with very good descriptions of the air activity and the undersea activity. Sure, the characters were a bit over the top at times, but that's why we read escapist stuff.
Sometimes the author let the details overcome him, as in his description of some small-yacht sailing.
I particularly liked the section involving a cross-USA pursuit. Well portrayed ambience there.

Good on the author. May there be more!
Givan has taken what could have been a mundane spy story and made it engrossing through his fine writing and eye for detail. He's somehow managed to drop the reader back into the war years both in Europe and domestically, in both civilian and military circumstances. His prose is evocative, and makes me look forward to reading more of his works.
The way the author kept my interest with what was happening with all of the characters within the story, and brought me back in time in WW 2, when I was very young. The very thought of the theme of the story was a definite possibility, as Hitler and the third Reich had developed a bomber that could have conceivably delivered a atomic bomb, had the Germans developed one. Fred Lyddon, Phx, Az.
World War 2 era. A Nazi spy. Stolen A bomb plans. War shocked pilot, who meets the younger sister of a murdered A bomb scientist. Romance is inevitable but slow and painful. Great ending! Only one question. When Tyler flew a B-17, why a picture of a 2 engined bomber on the cover? It looks to be a B-26, a Martin if I not mistaken. I will.look forward to reading your other books.
As the title says, an entertaining read that could have been much better with some attention to detail and some ruthless editing. There are several inaccuracies that are more than annoying to anyone knowledgeable about World War II but the general plot and storyline were entertaining. First of all, the B-17 had a three-bladed prop, not four-bladed. The only hydraulic system on the entire aircraft was the brakes. Everything else was electrically controlled. This is one of the reasons the aircraft was so rugged. The bombardier did not give steering vectors to the aircraft commander after the Initial Point. He actually "flew" the aircraft from the IP to the Aiming Point via the Norden bombsight through the autopilot. And for Pete's sake, it's ORDNANCE not ORDINANCE. I see this mistake repeatedly in these type of novels. An ordinance is a rule or law. Ordance is what you blow up stuff with. It's almost as annoying as characters who say "over and out." There are no "hallways" on a submarine and U-Boats were not commanded by Commanders. In fact, there was no such rank in the Kriegsmarine. Usually the CO of a U-Boat was a Kapitanleutnant, roughly the equivalent of a U.S. Navy Lieutenant. His rank was abbreviated to Ka-Leu (ka loy) and he was usually called Herr Kaleu by his crew. Not a big deal in the big picture but it's what helps separate good books from great books. I doubt very seriously a Piper J-3 could ever carry any ordnance that could more than amuse a U-Boat. And the A-2 leather jacket that the main character wore in the book is not a Bomber Jacket. It's a FLIGHT jacket. Only civilians would ever call it a bomber jacket. The A-2 was worn by both fighter and bomber jocks. In fact, most bomber crewman wore the B-3 shearling lined jacket. Anyway, despite these and a few other questionable details, it was still an enjoyable read and worth the investment. The conclusion almost had the feel of a Clive Cussler novel, a little over the top but still fun. I hope the author will try more work in this vein, perhaps letting a technical expert review his work before it's published.
I really enjoyed this book! It was a great story, well written, easy to read and had an exciting ending. I stayed up much later than usual at night to read this book because I did not want to put it down. I found the descriptions of life for civilians during WWII to be very accurate based on what my parents told me, right down to the description of ration coupons. I grew up in the area where the conclusion of the book takes place and the description of this area is one of the most accurate I have read that was written by someone who did not grow up there. Richard Givan has written a great book. I have already purchased Double by Richard Givan!
